Hi there,
Welcome to my corner of the internet! I am Olubukunola Solabi, and I am the Marketing and Corporate Communications officer for a Trust Council. Yes, we are keeping it coded over here.
So where did it all begin? Was I always looking to become a marketing girlie? Why did I study History and International Studies? Relax, all your questions will be answered.
I studied History and International Studies in Babcock university and no, I wasn’t forced to do so. I always loved the idea of being a Diplomat. I loved it so much that I opted for French in secondary school even though I had a very mean French teacher. Do I still want to be a Diplomat? Of course, but I still firmly believe that I am on the right path despite the field difference.
My love for Marketing and Communications first started when I developed a keen interest for writing. I found writing very intriguing and a beautiful way to express myself. This made me start a blog (my long-lost love) called Bukola Talks but that’s a story for another day. My next experience of Marketing was when I interned in the marketing department of an aviation company then next as a content intern in a PR Company. The rest, they say, is history.
Fast forward to today, how did I become a Marketing and Corporate Communications girlie? I am firstly grateful for how intentional God is about my life. He has placed the right people and resources around me to enable me to be the best version of myself.
In January 2023, one of my mentors fully funded a professional course in Advance Brand Management and Leadership. It was an intense 3-month training, and I was also juggling that with a remote job which was draining. In my second month of training, I was recommended for my current role. I was so nervous, I doubted myself at first especially because I got so comfortable with the remote job I had at that time. I wondered if I was ready for the new change, but a good friend reminded me of how all the roles I had worked in and all the multitasking I had done were all leading and preparing me for this very moment. I was also reminded that I was a badass and I could do anything I put my mind on.
I submitted my CV, went through 3 if not 4 stages of interview and assessment, and finally, I got the job. It was a very exciting and proud moment for me. However, in that excitement, I made a decision not to stop there. In this job, I ensure that I put my best foot forward and deliver excellently in everything I do because I understand the importance of leaving a good footprint in every organisation I work in, and just because I don’t have it in me to be anything less than excellent.
So, to every and anyone reading this, it’s okay not to have it all figured out now. It’s okay to try your hands on different things outside your regular line of study. Just make sure you put in the work, and get the right skill set and training you need to set you apart.
Don’t underestimate the importance of having the right people around you, trust me, they play a major role in the decisions you make. Lastly, don’t put so much pressure on yourself. I know this seems easier said than done but you can do it. Every time you notice you are being pressured, take it as an opportunity to motivate yourself. Tap yourself and say I got this then take a deep breath and speak to someone you trust.
Oh wow, I feel like a big Aunty right now, lol. Anyhoo, if there’s any part of my story you want me to talk more about or if there’s something else you’d like me to share, feel free to let me know.
Till then, this is goodbye.
With love,
Olubukunola Solabi(BSM)
